More than two decades may have passed, but fashion memories last forever—and for Kelly Clarkson and Natalie Portman, those memories came with a hearty laugh and a dash of nostalgia.

On a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the Grammy-winning singer and host surprised actress Natalie Portman with a hilarious red carpet throwback that showed the two stars in nearly identical outfits at different MTV award shows back in 2002.

“This is the most identical outfit ever,” Clarkson teased, unveiling side-by-side photos of herself and Portman both wearing white button-down shirts, jeans, necklaces, and sandals.

Portman’s reaction was priceless: “Oh my God!” she gasped, bursting into laughter. “That’s amazing.”

Clarkson added with a grin, “We went to the same store with our moms and got the same outfit. That’s the one time I get to say I look like you.”

The charming moment sparked a bit of reminiscing. “When I was younger, we didn’t have stylists,” Portman shared. “You could kind of wear whatever you wanted. I would just be like, go to the store with my mom, pick something out. Now it’s like a whole big to-do.”

Portman recalled wearing the now-infamous look to the MTV Movie Awards in June 2002, where she presented Best Female Performance alongside Star Wars co-star Ewan McGregor. The award ultimately went to Nicole Kidman for Moulin Rouge, which also starred McGregor.

Clarkson wore her version of the outfit at the MTV Video Music Awards just two months later, during her American Idol days. Then a finalist on the hit show, Clarkson appeared on stage with fellow contestant Justin Guarini and judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson to present Best New Artist in a Video to Avril Lavigne for her chart-topping single “Complicated.”

The revelation came courtesy of a staff member on The Kelly Clarkson Show who spotted the uncanny fashion match. “I was like, ‘We are almost wearing the most identical outfit ever,’” Clarkson said, still amused. “It was a time, people! We’re the same age.”

Fans were treated to a wholesome moment between two icons who clearly appreciated the coincidence and the light-heartedness it brought. Clarkson wrapped it up perfectly: “I just thought that was pretty hilarious that we look identical.”

Portman agreed, smiling warmly: “That’s amazing.”
